Looking for a home in Falmouth? One that features all the amenities that make the community special – yet is close to Portland?
From the moment you arrive at 70 US Route One, you are impressed by the sweeping drive that leads an elevated porch and front door. The home is set-back from the street by a buffer of large trees, providing an intimate sense of privacy.
Once inside the first impression is a beautifully finished home with very large rooms. On entering the separate hallway there are three doors: to the left is the very large L-shaped lounge/dining room; to the right is a separate office; and straight ahead is the new kitchen highlighted by solid wood cabinets and granite counter tops. Across from the kitchen is a over-sized second living room complete with a fireplace, built-in shelves and access to the recently refurbished double deck. There is a downstairs half bathroom and hall closet.
Upstairs are four bedrooms: a large master suite and on-suite, skylights and generous closets; a second semi-master bedroom with a walk-in closet: and two good-sized guest rooms. There is also a second large separate bathroom.
There are two basements – each covers an area of about half of the house. The main basement provides an enormous amount of storage space with built-in shelving, the other providing access to the foundations at the other side of the house.

This home was very cleverly designed by its architect. Although built on essentially a “rectangle”, the design incorporates many interesting angles and internal views. It’s a great home for entertaining, striking a balance between open space while still featuring distinct rooms. Surrounding the house are well-kept lawns on all sides and it stands back from the road with a mature growth of mixed trees along the front edge of the property. With the Maine Audubon nearby, bird-watchers will enjoy the colorful birds that frequently visit. And dog-lovers have endless varieties of walks to keep them and their pets interested (the house has an invisible fence fitted). The same applies to bike-riding.
Meet the Owners:
The current owners have made a huge amount of improvements over recent years: all new flooring and decorations; a new roof, new color for the outside, refurbishment of external drains; the rationalization of trees, keeping the best ones and taking out the ones that were a block to the sweep of the grass; a totally new kitchen; and the refurbishment of the whole downstairs area.
Falmouth is an absolutely ideal location, especially this side of the town by the ocean with its immediate proximity to Casco Bay and Mackworth Island and, of course, the nearby Falmouth Town Landing with its little beach. This home can be claimed to be the single best location in Greater Portland. And it’s true! Downtown Portland is less than five minutes away…Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s are local stores! The Interstate is two minutes up the street. Martin’s Point Healthcare is two minutes down the street. Then, two minutes into Falmouth Village provides all the other convenient national and local stores and the library etc. The city bus even stops about 10 yards away!
Falmouth has 0ne of the best in America – and there are also two highly-respected pre-schools both within minutes from the house.
There are many positives to being located on Route One. It certainly is not affected by major traffic noise and, more often than not, there is no wait for a car to pass before moving out into the road. The school bus picks up and drops off right at the end of the driveway, so there is no having to walk up the street in the snow and put little kids on the bus.
This lovely home is just about the best of all worlds for family living: entertaining indoors or on the big deck; relaxing in a the very large yard; being so close to the ocean and beaches for all kinds of recreation; and, of course, bringing up kids in the enviable Falmouth school district. The home is in a real neighborhood community.
